Nokia has launched the latest Lumia phone in South Africa. The Lumia 1520, and it is big, fast, and very good indeed. Windows phones have leapt ahead in both hardware and the software on the Lumia 1520. Microsoft and Nokia have created a bold, fluid, and polished Windows Phone experience with the Lumia 1520. Steven Ambrose swaps SIMs and give the Lumia 1520 a thorough test.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 is instantly noticeable with its 6” ClearBlack IPS screen. The latest in a series of very good screens from Nokia, the Lumia 1520 showcases the best screen yet. Full HD resolution with super sensitive touch, very good viewing angles, make this Lumia a pleasure to use, even in bright sunlight. The screen has excellent colour rendition and changeable colour profiles for those that want to customise the experience.

The overall design is clearly Lumia. The execution of the solid polycarbonate body with excellent fit and finish make the Lumia 1520 feel premium. Despite its size, the thin body and curved sides make the Lumia 1502 fairly easy to handle. There is no hiding the overall size and this makes the Lumia 1520 easier to use with two hands, especially when taking pictures.

On the rear a slight bump contains the 20 Megapixel rear camera and dual LED flash. The Lumia 1520 has a slot for a Micro SD card and takes a Nano Sim as used in Apple iPhone devices. Charging is via a Micro USB port, and there are buttons for the Camera and volume on the side.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 is the first Windows phone that features state of the art technology from the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Quad core processor at 2.2 GHZ, to the full HD Screen.  A massive 3400mAh battery powers the large screen and fast processor easily through a working day.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 runs the latest version of Windows Phone and this is a very good thing. Microsoft Windows Phone Black Update allows Nokia to utilise the hardware and screen resolution on the Lumia 1520. The user experience is very fast, fluid, and easy to use. On the Lumia 15220 many more tiles can be displayed on the front screen and this allows more information at a glance.

The Lumia 1520 standouts were the camera app and navigation, both of which are easy to use and in many ways set the bar for any smartphone. The Camera app along with a feature called refocus lense, work exceptionally well and offer expert users along with those who just want great family shots, ease of use and excellent quality pictures. The Lumia 1520 is easily one of the best mobile cameras available.

The Windows Phone app store has matured rapidly, there are very few if any of the top key apps I use that are not available, with BBM coming soon, along with a few others, there is no longer a dearth of good apps.

Nokia’s flagship smartphone is a simply put a great device. The Nokia Lumia 1520 has a beautiful full HD screen, excellent build quality, and an outstanding camera. This is the best windows phone yet, by a long margin. The Microsoft windows phone ecosystem is growing fast and the latest version of the operating system allows the use of cutting edge hardware.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 is big, and that may be its only real drawback. The experience using the Lumia 1520 is hugely satisfying, that said, Windows phone may not appeal to everybody, it does take some getting used to. If you are looking for a large screen phone along with superior camera and connectivity to the Microsoft ecosystem, then the Nokia Lumia 1520 may just be the perfect device for you.
