Over the past two or so years, a terrible disease has infected the world. Its not swine flu, and its not Lady Gaga. It is the terrible affliction of the advent of netbooks. These puff-sized excuses of technological patchwork have failed to impress time and time again. It is for this reason I was excited when the Samsung R610 was delivered. This seemed to be a proper laptop to enjoy. A good ol’ T-Bone steak compared to the celery sticks of the netbooks that have been sent our way of late. I was right.
The first feature that distinguishes this from a netbook is, of course, its size. At 2.8kg it is larger than most laptops, and is definitely heavier. It must also be said thought that it is remarkably pretty, and even though might be cumbersome to keep with you, will be able to look good with it, anywhere. You will want to use it anywhere as with its built in microphones, web cam, 4 strategically spaced USB slots, very flashy HDMI out and full keyboard (a normal keyboard with a number pad, like most desktop keyboards), one gets the feeling that this is not a one trick pony. The full keyboard does take some getting used to and it also means that the mouse pad is placed off the centre of the device, making it difficult to locate at times. The arrow keys are also awkwardly placed, but I do get the feeling that it will become easier to operate with time.
One benefit of its large size is the fact that it has an appropriately large screen. At 1,366 x 768 on an HD LCD screen, the laptop has one of the better screens available in the market. It also comes with a fairly high-powered video processor, so it could cope with even the most seizure causing visuals, rather adroitly.
One thing that does disappoint is its low battery life, which after a full charge lasts about 3 hours, which is not bad but is small enough to prove to be massively inconvenient at times. It does have a LED battery life indicator on the bottom of the laptop, which is cool, and thankfully now becoming a standard in the industry. It also makes NO noise when operating which is also now commonplace, but its value cannot be stressed enough. This is convenient as its speakers are rather high quality and have none of the “buzz” that most laptops get at higher volumes.
The processor allows for it use with Windows 7 without any hiccups and allows for pretty much all applications to be run smoothly. It comes with either a 320GB or 500GB hard drive which is pretty impressive and will probably be enough to cover all your storage needs for any work, or play, you would need to do on this device.
This is a lot of laptop and does come with a small downside; it costs rather a lot of money. Samsung gives it a recommended retail price of $1 500 or R12 000 for the 320GB version. But overall for the multitude of multi-functions and multi-layers that this laptop brings, I would give it the approval of being worth it if you can afford it.
