Review: Microsoft Too Human

Story:
Too human combines Norse mythology and futuristic inter-species warfare however with little rapport. You take on the role of Baldur a Norse god fighting for a cybernetic-enhanced human race fighting of Loki’s machine army. Characters such as Thor and Odin are presented directly from the Norse beliefs yet are not as effective within the environment they are placed. Who would’ve guessed that a large thundering hammer wouldn’t lay waste to a cyber horde of gun-wielding, rocket-firing militia? The potential of the story is unlimited yet the actual materialisation is narrow. Character’s emotions and agenda’s are irrelevant and unnecessary as well as many of the in-game miniclips.

Style:
All hope is not lost as the style of the game is straightforward. The menu’s take a moment to understand and become insanely efficient as the game develops. The choice of five different classes of soldier is effective. The character’s developments of skills are easily acquired through a physical tree of progression. Convenience is found once a player cannot defeat an enemy or complete a mission without a certain skill as the development tree can be rearranged to suit the requirements. However the constant collection of items will leave even the most patient frustrated as little difference is found in each item of which there are millions.

Graphics:
Too Human is not in any way “eye candy” but in its limitations certain elements are enjoyable. One such element was the effects of the ‘ruined’ attacks where your chosen soldier’s inner beast is released and the enemy is sent reeling. Cinematic and in-game videos are disappointing and reveal bugs with movement and lighting. During game play environments are aesthetically pleasing but are not interactive.

Game play:
Aspects of the game play are enthralling and at the same time unsatisfactory. The use of the right analogue stick to wield hand held weapons is fresh and exciting yet attempting to perform new combinations becomes tedious and almost impossible as the slightest change in angle of the stick will determine the remainder of the combination. Sound and feeling of close combat and hand held weapons are adequate yet long range weapons give no indication to their relative strengths. Character development and weapon upgrades are left redundant as the enemy progresses equally thus no change in intensity of skill is necessary. Boss fights are often too easy and leave you wanting more.

Conclusion:
Too Human with a development background of ten years (although hellish in every way) has not produced the goods. Many aspects leave the average gamer feeling bored and annoyed. Only the better gamers will receive a more fulfilling gaming bargain. However with the likelihood of a trilogy the next two may be the creator’s saving grace. Let us all hope, creators and gamers alike, that the next instalment is at least entertaining.

Rating:
6/10
