Project Natal is a camera and sensor assembly that recognizes faces, body movements, objects, and even voices in order to integrate the player into the gaming environment.
The assembly bar tracks a persons full body movement in 3-D, what this allows one to do is control the Xbox 360 menu system with hand gestures, login to Xbox Live using facial recognition and most importantly it makes your entire body the game controller. The microphone not only responds to voice commands but is so sensitive that it can respond to a change in emotion in ones voice.
Its good to know that the developers at Microsoft did not just say “Yeah, we have voice recognition, lets leave it at that.” They innovated, they pushed the technological envelope a little further. For a while it seemed like Microsoft forgot that they are a technology company that needs to be at the cutting edge. Now Microsoft is back.
Microsoft are being hugely ambitious, even with Project Natal not due for launch until at least 2010, it is still a huge task to get Project Natal to integrate properly in the average living room.
Just watch the video, Project Natal is like controlling Star Ship Enterprise from your sofa.
